Over the past 20 years, there has been a great deal of research and application of allograft stem cells in the treatment of orthopedic diseases. The regenerative properties of mesenchymal allograft stem cells, found in umbilical cord allograft stem cells, have been utilized in tissue engineering techniques in orthopedic surgery. The results found that allograft stem cell therapy has successfully been used for major orthopedic procedures such as bone-joint injuries (fractures, bone defects, nonunion and spinal injuries), ligament-tendon injuries, osteoarthritis-cartilage defects, osteogenesis imperfecta, and femoral head osteonecrosis. When combined with bone tissue engineering utilizing the scaffolds, allograft stem cells were shown to provide faster and better healing of tissues.

Allograft stem cells are described as having the ability to differentiate more than 200 different cell types in the body. They are specific cell types that can create new cells in existing healthy tissues. Allograft stem cells may help to repair tissues in those structures that are injured or damaged when they differentiate into multi lineages of cells.

Among the different sources for cell therapy, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the most preferred source because they can differentiate to many different tissues. For orthopedic diseases, this is particularly important in terms of muscles, bones, fat, and cartilage. Allograft stem cells obtained from the umbilical cord are ethically sound and in various trials have been shown to be effective in treating various conditions when professionally administered.
